Picking and Choosing

How much of the Bible do you believe?  Do you have the option of labeling selected parts of the Bible as “God’s truth” and other parts of the Bible as being irrelevant or unnecessary?

Question Mark

Is it ever o.k. to “fill in the gaps” to make scripture relevant for us today or delete parts of scripture that appear to be unnecessary? NO!

“Everything that I command you, you shall be careful to do. You shall not add to it or take from it. (Deuteronomy 12:32 ESV)

You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God that I command you. (Deuteronomy 4:2 ESV)

Every word of God proves true; … Do not add to his words, … (Proverbs 30:5-6 ESV)

Is it ever o.k. to “modify” parts of scripture? NO!

Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go. (Joshua 1:7 ESV)

Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:19 ESV)

We may not understand everything that we read in the Bible but God does expect us to believe that everything written in the Bible is true.

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.  God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.  (2 Timothy 3:16-17 NLT)
